Our work speaks for itself.During the construction process it was necessary to remove and replace wooden boards that have supported the Starter’s House for nearly 100 years. As demolition commenced, the layers of time were peeled away, revealing a historic richness and unforeseen opportunity. It was discovered during the demolition process that many of these boards were heart pine, which was harvested from the virgin forests of Florida. Heart pine is the heart wood of the tree and is only present in very large pine trees aged 300-400 years. This installation is a reflection upon nearly 500 years of history, the tightly bound rings of the heartwood are a record of the tree’s life and the environmental forces that created it. Upon closer examination it is revealed that the texture of the wall is riddled with nail holes and scars that record the acts of constructions and the history of the building.
“Vestige of the Past” explores the relationship between the fleeting nature of individual lives and the enduring identity of a community. Focusing on Winter Park, this installation uses repetition as a visual language to reflect how personal histories, though brief in isolation, accumulate into something far more lasting. Each repeated form represents an individual presence—distinct yet interconnected—contributing to a larger narrative. Through this accumulation, the work emphasizes the collective power of personal stories and their role in shaping the shared memory and identity of the community as a whole.
